Four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers announced his desire to suit up for the New York Jets in 2023 during an appearance this afternoon on "The Pat McAfee Show", and also had some choice words for his soon to be former team in the Green Bay Packers in how they're handling the situation.
"At this point, as I sit here, ya know, I think since Friday, I've made it clear that my intention was to play," Rodgers explained. "And my intention was to play for the New York Jets. And I haven't been holding anything up at this point – it's been compensation that the Packers are trying to get for me, and kinda digging their heels in."
However, he is yet to make an "official" decision.
"This isn't a decision day," Rodgers, 39, said.
"This isn't me deciding, announcing to the world that this is what's going on. In fact, that's already happened. We're actually days past this. This is kind of clearing things up, I think, for everybody interested."
It certainly sounds as though the Packers will be rolling with 1st round draft selection Jordan Love as their starting quarterback under center for the 2023 NFL season, which would mark the first time that he's entered a campaign with the starter's tag.
“And also the reality of situation – it is what it is – the Packers would like to move on. They’ve let me know that in so many words. They’ve let other people know that in direct words,” Rodgers added.
“And because I still have that fire and I want to play and I would like to play in New York, it’s just a matter of getting that done at this point.”
Meanwhile, Rodgers also explained that he was grateful for his "darkness retreat" experience.
"The darkness gave me a lot of time to contemplate everything," he said. "I'm thankful for that time in the darkness."
