The Denver Broncos made the call to terminate head coach Nathaniel Hackett just before the start of the new year after he amassed a 4-11 record in his first year on the job; he didn't even last a full NFL season.

Needless to say, it's been a disappointing season all around with the Broncos, especially with struggling quarterback Russell Wilson and his massive $245 million contract. But could the team have a Super Bowl winning head coach in their sights? According to the latest report, it looks that way.

Minutes ago, a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter indicated that the Broncos will be interviewing former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton for their vacancy:

"The Denver Broncos requested and received permission from the New Orleans Saints to interview Sean Payton for their head coach job, league sources tell ESPN.

The NFL ruled that any in-person interview with Payton cannot be conducted until at least January 17, per sources."

Prior to his retirement, Payton had been head coach of the New Orleans Saints since his hiring in 2006, and led the team to the Super Bowl XLIV championship. He's also led them to eight playoff berths and six NFC South titles.

“I still have a vision for doing things in football,” Payton said in his farewell Saints press conference. “And I’ll be honest with you, that might be coaching again at some point. I don’t think it’s this year, but I think maybe in the future.”

We'll keep our eyes on this one for any further developments. Broncos fans, how would you like the sight of the experienced and championship-winning Payton patrolling the Denver sidelines?
