Chiefs cut Damon Arnette one day before the AFC Championship following arrest.

Not a smart decision.

The Kansas City Chiefs are just one day removed from the AFC Championship game and the last thing they probably wanted on their hands was a distraction of any kind. Unfortunately for the Chiefs that is exactly what they got on Saturday morning, and quite frankly I feel they do deserve to shoulder a little of the blame for it.

According to multiple reports Damon Arnette was cut by the Chiefs earlier this morning when the team learned that he had been arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. Arnetta is no stranger to controversy and was in fact released by the Las Vegas Raiders back in November of 2021 after a video of him surfaced online, one that showed him brandishing a firearm and making a number of threats. In spite of his checkered past however the Chiefs decided to sign the controversial cornerback to a contract last week, one that has obviously not turned out very well for either Arnette or the Chiefs.

It appears Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network was the first to break the story earlier today.

To be clear here Arnetta would not have been playing in the AFC Championship game, which you could argue makes the distraction of his arrest even worse, but instead was signed to a future or reserves contract. The Chiefs brought the former first round pick into the fold for the future, likely believing that they could help the former first round pick turn both his life and his career in the National Football League in a more positive direction. I certainly don't blame the Chiefs for trying to give a man a second chance, or a chance at redemption, but in this particular instance the situation has quickly turned into a disaster.

Arnette was originally drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the first round (19th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft but thus far he has proven to be a major disappointment on the field given his draft pedigree. Many believed that Arnette would become a premier cornerback in the NFL following his draft, but it seems now that his career in the league many very well be in jeopardy.
