The Dallas Cowboys certainly weren't aided by the fact that running back Tony Pollard suffered a broken left leg and combined with a high ankle sprain on a tackle late in the second quarter of their divisional postseason game against the San Francisco 49ers last month; the 49ers would advance to the NFC championship game, while the Cowboys were once again sent home early to an uncertain offseason.
Pollard happens to be a pending free agent, and there has been discussion on whether or not the team will be placing the franchise tag on him. However, team owner and general manager Jerry Jones decided against confirming those rumors.
"Why would I say that?" Jones said, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. "You know I shouldn't say that, OK, because I might be trying to sign somebody else, and I'm threatening with the franchise tag."
"The tag really does, if you can, need to be used two or three different ways," Jones said. "There's more value than just saying that's it there, now we worry about all this other stuff. So there's a way to take that and maybe get a little bit more out of it."
Meanwhile, Jones provided the following update on Pollard's health:
“What I am saying is my awareness of the repair that was done is good in terms of being able to not have it alter his contract,” Jones said.
Last season, Pollard racked up 1,007 yards with nine touchdowns on 193 attempts. As of now, the Cowboys are one of 14 NFL teams over the 2023 cap ceiling of $224.8MM.
