Ex-Cowboys TE Gavin Escobar killed in accident

Terrible news.

Michael Whitaker

The extended family of the Dallas Cowboys has suffered a loss today.

Gavin Escobar, who was drafted Dallas Cowboys in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft after having played college football at San Diego State University, was killed in a rock climbing accident. He and another victim were found in a remote area of  Idyllwild, CA on Wednesday.

Escobar played for the Cowboys from 2013 to 2016, and racked up 30 receptions and eight touchdowns in his career. He would later become a firefighter in Long Beach following his playing days.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the off-duty death of Long Beach Firefighter Gavin Escobar. Hired on February 5, 2022, Firefighter Escobar was assigned to Fire Station 3 on B-shift," a post on social media from the department read. "Firefighter Escobar leaves behind his wife and two young children."

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Escobar family.
