Jerry Jones annouces Brett Maher's job status

It was a bizarre sequence of events during last night's game.

The Dallas Cowboys have officially moved on in the National Football League postseason thanks to taking down Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last night at Raymond James Stadium.

However, one of the key storylines of the game was the inexplicable performance from Cowboys kicker Brett Maher, who missed a whopping four extra point attempts following Dallas touchdowns. He now forever holds the NFL record for that stunning stat.

While quarterback Dak Prescott was clearly agitated on the sidelines following Maher's third miss of the night, he was in a far more forgiving mood afterward, stating that he himself has experienced stretches of poor play and that he fully expects Maher to come back next week with a better performance.

And now, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is offering his take on the situation.

“Well, I think the first thing you do is talk about how isn’t it great to have that the number one thing we need to correct or the number one thing we need to address. I think that shows everything about not only how we played, but where we are with this team right now,” Jones said.

“Make no mistake about it we got to have the same week of preparation," he continued. "Now, over to our kicker. This is a classic case of looking at what he’s done for this team and done on the field all year, not just last night. And, so, but kicking is a technical thing. It has everything to do with the — just frankly mentally having it all together when you step up there. And, so, we’ll read this thing as the week goes along. I don’t want to get out over skis and get ahead of it.”

“I figured that was behind him, but we will take a look at it. We can’t be really a big setback to get into the rest of this tournament, rest of this playoff with shakiness at kicker.”

It sounds as though the Cowboys will indeed be rolling with Maher as their kicker for next week's critical matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
