The Dallas Cowboys have themselves a new quarterback behind Dak Prescott this season in Trey Lance, who was acquired from the San Francisco 49ers this weekend in exchange for a mid-round draft pick.

And as team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has put it, it's about having options at the position.

"He gives us an opportunity to do what we would always like to be doing," Jones said after the Cowboys final preseason game. "It would be ideal with Dak to have a young, prospective, developing quarterback that could just be in the room."

Jones also hinted that the Cowboys were considering taking him in the Draft.

"We felt good about him with the evaluation we had for him at the draft," Jones continued. "We felt good about what we’ve seen, tape that he’s had since he’s been in the NFL. And it’s one that we made the decision almost the minute we heard the name. Let’s get him."

Meanwhile, Prescott himself is happy to have Lance in town and is ready to welcome him to the team.

"I understand that they’re probably on a timeline," Prescott said after the game. "They need to get something done. As I said, he felt like that strengthened this team. As I said, ready to welcome him."

Lance enters his first season with the Cowboys on the final year of his rookie contract, that also carries an option for a 5th season. Dallas opens up the regular season next month on Sunday, September 10 against the visiting New York Giants at AT&T Stadium.
