3-time NFL MVP Brett Favre accomplished just about everything imaginable on the football field during his Hall of Fame career that was defined by his time with the Green Bay Packers

He isn't facing any criminal charges, but could face a civil lawsuit within 30 days, according to reports. Mississippi State auditor Shad White demands that Favre immediately return $828,000 in "illegally spent welfare funds".

He received over $1 million in funds from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program through the Mississippi Community Education Center, accepting the money for speaking engagements but never fulfilling his obligations for Families First of Mississippi.

Per Lee O. Sanderlin of the Clarion Ledger:

"Two years ago my office audited [the Department of Human Services]," White said. "After two years of work, we found tens of millions of dollars in misspending. Those findings have now been confirmed, this month, by an independent forensic audit commissioned by DHS."

An expert from a letter obtained by Mississippi Today's Anna Wolfe:

“The sum demanded represents illegal expenditures of public funds made to you or to entities or combines for which you are legally obligated to pay and/or the unlawful dispositions of public property, including public funds, made with you or with entities or combines for which you are legally responsible to pay,” the letter reads. “These illegal expenditures and unlawful dispositions were made when you knew or had reason to know through the exercise of reasonable diligence that the expenditures were illegal and/or the dispositions were unlawful.”

Favre himself issued a statement in May of 2020 on social media, saying that he was offered money for making appearances though he didn't know the origin of the funds when he received payment:
