Did they make the right call?

By now, you've surely heard the news that the Pittsburgh Steelers have made the inexplicable decision to retain heavily maligned offensive coordinator Matt Canada despite the fact that his team was ranked 2nd to last in the NFL this season in total touchdowns scored.

And it wasn't long before the inevitable fan backlash began, many of whom simply can't believe that head coach Mike Tomlin would endorse Canada's return to his staff for next year. And a notable sports columnist is accusing the Steelers of simply not caring about winning with their move.

According to Chris Mueller of The Beaver Times Online, the Steelers are making an egregious mistake.

"Mike Tomlin and Art Rooney got together, took stock of the way that the NFL’s remaining teams play offense, and decided to make a change at offensive coordinator. Rooney said he would foot the bill, and Tomlin got to work immediately, using his extensive network of contacts to find the next up-and-coming innovator to maximize Kenny Pickett’s talents......Just kidding!"

"Here’s another number: Canada’s offense was 23rd in the league in points per drive, at 1.68. Every team that finished below them fired their offensive coordinator, head coach, or both.

Tomlin and Rooney saw fit to stay the course. I’m sure that goes back to the “not like everyone else” business model. The same model that has produced precious little for these last six years."

He concludes:

"Keeping Matt Canada around shows the Steelers aren’t serious about being good at either of those things. And apparently not about winning, either."
