The Kansas City Chiefs are officially Super Bowl LVII champions, having defeated the Philadelphia Eagles last night at State Farm Stadium by a 38-35 final score. The Chiefs have now won the Super Bowl for the second time in the last four years, while the Eagles missed out on their 2nd title since 2018.
However, there was a bit of controversy near the end of the game that had many talking long afterward. Eagles cornerback James Bradberry was whistled for a defensive holding call against on 3rd and 8, giving the Chiefs an automatic first down. They would eventually seize the lead on a field goal.
Bradberry would later admit after the game that it was the correct call, despite the criticism.
"It was a holding. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide," he said after Super Bowl LVII.
Meanwhile, head coach Nick Sirianni stated that there were multiple other variables that contributed to his team's setback, and that they wouldn't blame it on one questionable call by the officials.
"It always appears to be one call. That is not what it is. So many teams contribute to the result of the game. Today they were better," he said.
One of the stronger reactions came from analyst Pat McAfee, who absolutely blasted the officials for the timing of the call.
"That ref making that holding call at that time at that stage at that game? Super Bowl? Huh? Huh?!…" he said. "Hey refs - can't f---ing call that there. Okay? It's not about you. Now was there a hold? I guess. If you stop and go frame by frame, he had his hands on him, but nonetheless, at that stage? Come on! we were robbed of a potential overtime game in the Super Bowl!"
