Jaguars owner releases statement following Urban Meyer's termination

He's out after less than a year on the job thanks to a disastrous 2021 season.

Urban Meyer has been fired as head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars following a 2-11 start to the 2021 season that has been rife with controversy, with the latest coming earlier this week with allegations that Meyer called his assistant coaches "idiots" and even kicked a former placekicker.

For the 2nd straight year, it will be Darrell Bevell who takes over on an interim basis; he did the same last season with the Detroit Lions following the termination of Matt Patricia.

"Darrell Bevell will serve as interim head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars for the balance of the 2021 season. Darrell succeeds Urban Meyer. After deliberation over many weeks and a thorough analysis of the entirety of Urban's tenure with our team, I am bitterly disappointed to arrive at the conclusion that an immediate change is imperative for everyone. I informed Urban of the change this evening. As I stated in October, regaining our trust and respect was essential. Regrettably, it did not happen.

Trent Baalke continues as our general manager and will work with Darrell to ensure that our team will be inspired and competitive while representing Jacksonville proudly over our final four games of the season. In the spirit of closure and recharging our players, staff and fan base, I will not comment further until some point following the conclusion of the NFL season."

Of course, among Meyer's controversies this season was his getting a bit too friendly with a young female in a bar AFTER having decided not to return to Jacksonville with the team following a game against the Cleveland Browns.

Meyer may have been extremely successful in the collegiate football ranks, but he was anything but in the NFL.
