The Pittsburgh Steelers did not have the start to the 2023 NFL season that they had been hoping for, as the San Francisco 49ers marched into Acrisure Stadium and had their way with the host Steelers, winning easily by a 30-7 final score.

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy outplayed Steelers starter Kenny Pickett, while the Pittsburgh offense as a whole struggled to get anything going. That certainly will not do anything to help the maligned offensive coordinator Matt Canada in the eyes of the fan base.

Meanwhile, the Steelers lost Diontae Johnson to a hamstring injury; he did not return.

Afterward, head coach Mike Tomlin laid it all on the line by stating the obvious of what took place, and how they can try to rectify it.

“We gotta coach better, we gotta play better. We talked about a lot of the things and worked on a lot of the things that unfolded in the ways that we didn’t want them to,” Tomlin said to reporters following the loss, according to video via the Steelers’ YouTue page. “And so we go back to the drawing board. We accept responsibility, obviously for the outcome. We compliment those guys on the quality work that they did. We absorb the negativity that comes with how we perform today, and we go back to work. We gotta prepare ’em better.

“They gotta play better, and that’s just the reality of it. We got kicked in the teeth today, in a lot of ways.”

The Steelers will get back to the drawing board as they prepare for the visit of the Cleveland Browns next week.
