Well, this is a bit of an unusual story as one Steelers rookie has had his professional football career end before it even officially began.

Monte Pottebaum, whom the Steelers signed out of Iowa after the conclusion of the 2023 NFL Draft, has decided to call it quits in what was a stunning announcement posted to the Steelers official Twitter feed earlier today.

Via AtoZSports:

“Pottebaum was signed on Saturday of the 2023 NFL Draft after he went undrafted out of Iowa. A traditional FB that is largely extinct in the modern NFL, Pottebaum was always going to be a longshot to make the roster, so instead of being fired, he said "I retire."

Pottebaum had a lengthy career with the Hawkeyes that included:

  • 45 games (13 starts) at Iowa (2019-23)
  • 20 rushes (0.4 avg.) for a total of 82 yards and one touchdown
  • 10 receptions for 85 yards”

Best of luck to him in his future endeavors.
