For Pittsburgh Steelers who were hoping that there was some credence to the report that former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden could be a potential candidate to replace maligned offensive coordinator Matt Canada, one particular former NFL figure has bad news for them.

Warren Sapp, who played under Mike Tomlin and Gruden while with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, essentially put the kibosh on any chance of Gruden replacing Canada as offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh.

While speaking with Jason Whitlock, Sapp had the following to say:

“Not even close,” Sapp said. “Come on, I can’t even say what Jon said. No. Mike T said, ‘I don’t even know who writes this stuff.’ There it is, boom. He’s going to watch his kid play at an Ivy League school, bright kid. Trust me, Mike T is an off week, and Jon and I are scheduling a golf outing this weekend. It’s creamsicle week in Tampa, so trust me, no, he’s not going.”

Gruden resigned as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders last year after controversial content was revealed in his emails; he would later sue the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell, saying that the emails were weaponized against him to do his name and professional status harm.
